St. Thomas University Partners with Meyer Shank Racing to Offer Students Unprecedented Experiential Learning Opportunities
Miami Gardens, FL — On August 24, 2025, Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) debuted its number 66 car, featuring St. Thomas University (STU) branding and piloted by IndyCar driver Marcus Armstrong, at the Milwaukee Mile 250. The STU-themed livery reached speeds over 170 mph during the race, showcasing a high-profile partnership that gave STU students the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in real-world motorsports settings.
Experiential Learning in Action
The MSR–STU partnership provided students with hands-on development opportunities across multiple disciplines. Data Science student Maria Ferreira Ramos worked alongside MSR engineers to analyze race data and optimize lap times and pit stop efficiency. Fashion Merchandising student Lucia Battistel designed the driver’s fire suit, which was chosen by IndyCar fans in an online contest. Culinary Arts student Marieth Useche developed specialty energy drinks to enhance driver focus and recovery, while Sports Administration student Naeve Duarte explored future sponsorship opportunities, including a concept for Neuralink.
Showcasing Student Talent on a National Stage
The collaboration allowed STU students to see their projects come to life during a major IndyCar race weekend. Both the car and Marcus Armstrong’s race suit were highlighted in broadcast features on FS1 and IndyCar on FOX. Alumni in attendance were excited to see their alma mater prominently represented, and STU leadership, including President David A. Armstrong, participated throughout the weekend, engaging with students and faculty while celebrating the university’s presence in a high-profile sporting event.
Building Institutional and Community Impact
Beyond individual student experience, the partnership enhanced STU’s visibility and brand-building. It provided a platform for students to gain professional skills, network with industry professionals, and demonstrate STU’s commitment to experiential learning. President Armstrong emphasized that these opportunities prepare students to become ethical leaders in their fields while fostering pride and connection within the broader STU community.
