Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), under parent NextEra Energy, Inc., is honored to be recognized on Site Selection magazine’s annual Top U.S. Utilities in Economic Development list.
The list, featured in the magazine’s September issue, is based on analysis of utility economic development impact, including jobs and capital investment associated with competitive business location decisions. Site Selection also evaluated website tools and data, innovative programs and incentives for business, including energy efficiency and renewable energy programs, and each utility’s own job-creating infrastructure and facility investment trends.
“More and more companies recognize how much the Sunshine State has to offer and they’re helping boost Florida’s already diverse economy through relocation,” said Eric Silagy, FPL Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “FPL’s Office of Economic Development, and team members across our company, continue to attract job creators and capital investors throughout the nation so FPL customers and the entire state of Florida can benefit from a robust economy. This recognition highlights how important their efforts have been and I’m proud of what they’re doing to help our communities grow.”
FPL’s Office of Economic Development – PoweringFlorida – was established in 2011 to help strengthen the state’s economy. The PoweringFlorida team assists companies searching for a new or expanded location by providing site and building information, workforce and community demographics, infrastructure assessments and competitive economic development rate programs. FPL’s headquarters in Juno Beach is also home to 35 Mules, an innovation hub supporting seven startup companies.
Since its launch in 2011, PoweringFlorida has helped nearly 250 companies locate or expand in Florida, resulting in more than 110,000 new and retained jobs, and a nearly $90 billion impact on the state’s economy.
This summer, FPL’s parent company, NextEra Energy, became the first company in history committed to moving past net zero all the way to Real ZeroTM, leveraging low-cost renewables to drive energy affordability for customers. The company has developed the Zero Carbon BlueprintTM, a comprehensive carbon-emissions-reduction plan, to outline the steps it would need to take to achieve its goals and track its progress. The plan would result in NextEra Energy decarbonizing itself, while leveraging its considerable scale and expertise to help its power sector and commercial and industrial customers reduce and, ultimately, eliminate carbon emissions from their own operations.
