Florida and other states are exposed to a growing range of risks, including extreme weather events; sea level rise and other climate trends. As we identify how to respond to the risks ahead, we must consider a Florida’s existing challenges:

  • Nearly 80% of Florida’s population lives in coastal areas.
  • Florida experienced 43 billion-dollar disaster events involving coastal areas between 1980 and 2016.
  • Sea levels in Southeast Florida are projected to rise from 2018 levels by a median amount of 2.5 inches by 2030 and 10.5 inches by 2060.

As Florida anticipates adding more than five million more residents by 2030, we must make careful decisions about how to protect, increase responsiveness, and invest in regions and communities at risk. Florida must improve the capacity of local, regional, and state agencies and nonprofit organizations to prepare for and respond to risks.
