$500K Google Grant Enables AI Integration Across Florida Poly Curriculum

Florida Polytechnic University is accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence into its academic programs thanks to a $500,000 grant from Google. The funding supports the University’s Faculty Innovation Lab, providing resources for faculty to embed AI into every STEM curriculum, ensuring students graduate with cutting-edge skills for a rapidly evolving technology landscape.

“Artificial intelligence is shaping far more than computer science and engineering – it’s transforming how we approach every discipline,” said Dr. Brad Thiessen, provost at Florida Poly. “This initiative ensures our students graduate skilled in STEM fundamentals and fluent in the technologies defining the future.”

The first cohort of 20 professors is undergoing training to develop AI-enhanced courses. These faculty members will teach the courses and lead workshops to train a second group, creating a ripple effect across the University. Within the first year, 40 faculty members will create AI-integrated courses, impacting more than 1,000 students annually. Ultimately, every Florida Poly program will include AI literacy or proficiency components, equipping students with hands-on experience in transformative technologies.

Dr. Asai Asaithambi, chair of Florida Poly’s departments of computer science and electrical, computer, and cybersecurity engineering, emphasized that the initiative fosters mastery of AI while promoting ethical and effective use of its tools. “This funding will fuel growth in AI-intensive education and research across all disciplines,” he said.

The program also aims to enhance AI-enabled research, spark interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthen Florida’s STEM workforce. Industries from manufacturing and healthcare to retail, agriculture, and professional services are increasingly adopting AI, highlighting the importance of preparing graduates with these essential skills.

“We’re grateful for Google’s investment in Florida Poly,” said Seth Spencer, director of development. “This support not only advances our AI research but ensures students gain the skills that will drive Florida’s economy forward.”
