New Florida Chamber Foundation Case Study Highlights Aviation as Key to Florida’s Workforce Competitiveness

The Florida Chamber Foundation’s Future of Work issued a new case study examining workforce trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping Florida’s aviation industry, one of the state’s vital economic drivers.

Florida’s aviation industry supports more than 2 million jobs and accounts for 13.5 percent of the state’s gross domestic product (GDP), making it one of Florida’s most powerful economic engines. As demand for aviation services continues to grow, new workforce data highlights mounting challenges driven by an aging skilled workforce and a widening gap between talent supply and industry demand.

The case study identifies South Florida and the Florida Panhandle as regions experiencing increasing workforce pressures due to their importance to aviation operations, logistics, and infrastructure. Without stronger coordination across employers, education institutions, and workforce partners, these gaps could threaten the industry’s long-term competitiveness.

“Florida’s aviation industry is essential to our state’s economic strength and global connectivity,” said Mark Wilson, president and CEO of the Florida Chamber Foundation. “The Foundation’s Future of Work case study reinforces that sustained growth will require a stronger, more coordinated approach to developing aviation talent pipelines. Data-driven collaboration between business, education, and workforce leaders is key to making certain Florida remains competitive for decades to come.”

The case study emphasizes the importance of aligning education and training programs with real-world industry needs. Through the Foundation’s Florida Talent Center Data Hub, aviation employers and workforce partners can access real-time labor market data, including current program completions and projected graduate pipelines for high-demand roles such as aviation mechanics, logistics specialists, and ground operations professionals.

The Florida Talent Center Data Hub gives industry leaders the tools they need to plan, target investments, and scale solutions where workforce gaps are most pressing.

“Continued aerospace growth in Florida depends on a steady talent pipeline of skilled aviation mechanics that are prepared for the evolving demands of the industry,” said Ed Murray, Vice President of Government Relations & Business Development, ST Engineering North America and Advisory Board member for the Florida Chamber Foundation’s Future of Work Initiative. “By using the Florida Chamber Foundation’s real-time workforce data and strengthening partnerships across education and industry, Florida can proactively address talent shortages and support continued innovation and expansion.”
