Lars Houmann is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Florida Hospital, and the Florida Division of Adventist Health System which includes 23 hospitals in Florida. With more than 2,200 beds, Florida Hospital serves the Orlando metropolitan area, admitting more patients annually than any other hospital in the U.S. Mr. Houmann has been with Florida Hospital since 1993, serving as its CEO since 2006. During his years at Florida Hospital, he has been responsible for several major hospital expansion projects, and was instrumental in the development and successful launch of Florida Hospital Celebration Health, a state-of-the-future healthcare facility that opened in 1998 in the Walt Disney Company’s community of Celebration. More recently, he oversaw Adventist Health System’s merger with University Community Healthcare in Tampa, Fl., which brought 4 new hospitals in to the Florida Division.
Mr. Houmann graduated from Columbia Union College in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He received his Master of Healthcare Administration degree from Loma Linda University in 1981. In 2010, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Health Administration from Northern Caribbean University Jamaica. Houmann is board certified in healthcare administration as a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has spent his entire career in hospital administration, serving at hospitals in Massachusetts, California, Arizona, and Florida. He has experience with small community hospitals, multi-hospital systems, and large teaching hospitals in both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors.
Mr. Houmann is actively involved in healthcare advocacy and economic development. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Hospital Association, serving as its Chairman in 2010/2011. He has served on the Board of Directors of Enterprise Florida (eFlorida), which is the Governor’s statewide council on economic development and is a member of the Florida Chamber of Commerce CEO Roundtable and its Board. Mr. Houmann is Chairman of bioOrlando, an organization dedicated to the development of the life sciences economy in Central Florida, and is an officer of the Board of the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission.
Mr. Houmann serves his community through volunteer involvement with organizations such as Heart of Florida United Way, American Heart Association, Shepherd’s Hope Clinics, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He actively participates in international healthcare mission projects in South America and Africa. He received the Adventist Health System Crystal Angel Award for mission excellence in 2009. He received the 2009 AIA Orlando Service Excellence Award of Merit in recognition of advancement of good design and enhancement of public awareness of the value of architecture to society. He received the 2009 & 2010 Orlando Business Journal Central Florida’s Most Influential Businessmen (Health Care) award.
