Gov. Rick Scott, who has been at odds with state university officials and faculty on issues ranging from tuition to course offerings, appointed a new task force Friday with a business-oriented leader to recommend changes for making Florida’s system more efficient, transparent and accountable.
According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the number of Florida patents set a record with 3,136 patents awarded for the year 2011.
Unless Congress extends the emergency benefits, the net effect could be a reduction in combined state and federal compensation, which once offered up to 99 weeks of benefits, to 20 weeks or less for Florida workers who lose their jobs in 2013 or beyond. Those currently drawing compensation or who apply before the end of this year are facing less drastic reductions.
In the eyes of those who run companies, Florida is now the No. 2 best state in which to do business.
