By The Numbers: August 2011
The trend of employment growth in Florida took a step backward in July, with the state losing a reported 22,100 jobs. Loss of government and construction jobs were the primary contributor to the month over decline in employment level, and Florida’s overall unemployment rate still remains uncomfortably higher than the national average. Considering longer-term trends, Florida’s employment picture has improved over the last year with initial claims for unemployment compensation decreasing by 17.3% and five Florida industries reporting positive job growth. Occupational demand in nursing continues to lead job demand with nearly 12,000 advertised openings in Florida for Registered Nurses in July.
