Redistricting Arguments Set by Supreme Court

February 13, 2012 | Print Print

The Florida Supreme Court has set the redistricting arguments on the Senate and House Legislative maps for Wednesday, February 29, 2012. This is the next step in the redistricting process. Since the regular legislative session is scheduled to end the next week on Friday, March 9, this leaves very little time to make any adjustment to these maps during regular legislative session.

The Florida Legislature passed the Joint Resolution for the Senate and House legislative maps last Thursday. Although the Attorney General had 15 days to forward to the Florida Supreme Court, AG Bondi sent the legislative maps to the Florida Supreme Court within 24 hours. Now the Florida Supreme Court has 30 days to render their opinion. Then, according to their decision, the next steps will be taken.

The Congressional maps are a different story. They do not require a review by the Florida Supreme Court. These maps are sent to the Governor, who has seven days after he receives the bill to sign or veto. So the Congressional maps could be set on a course for final approval this week. Once that happens, the Congressional maps are sent to the U. S. Department of Justice for sign-off.
