Providing A Strategic Vision for Florida’s Future

The Florida Chamber Foundation focuses on identifying SOLUTIONS to challenges facing Florida. Founded in 1968, the Foundation is a business-led, solutions development and research organization, working in partnership with state business leaders to secure Florida’s future. The Foundation’s Six Pillars™ framework serves as a visioning platform for developing the first-ever long-term strategic plan for the state. The Six Pillars identify the critical factors determining Florida’s future and provides a platform for local, regional and state-wide collaboration. The Six Pillars framework encompasses the following areas:

  • Talent Supply & Education
  • Innovation & Economic Development
  • Infrastructure & Growth Leadership
  • Business Climate & Competitiveness
  • Civic & Governance Systems
  • Quality of Life & Quality Places

The power of the Six Pillars framework as the lynchpin for change and planning has really come to the forefront. The Six Pillars Caucus System™, which began with 30 volunteers and grew to 100 by 2009, is the guiding force in the development of the first-ever, statewide strategic plan to guide Florida to a future economy that includes prosperity and high-paying jobs, vibrant communities, and global competitiveness. Today, the Six Pillars Caucus System is comprised of more than 400 top business leaders and issue experts in the state. Leveraging the hard work of the Caucus System, the Foundation released the first iteration of the Six Pillars 20-year Strategic Plan in September 2011. The Six Pillars Caucus System is supported by a regional effort known as the Six Pillars Communities™, to provide a common thread at the local level within the Six Pillars fabric. A county or region that adopts the Six Pillars as the framework for developing and communicating its strategic plan is designated a Six Pillars Community. In addition to the benefits of participating in a common agenda, the local voices become a chorus for change when their own strategic visions provide input to the evolution of the statewide strategic plan.

The adoption of the Six Pillars process has accelerated thanks to the support of the Florida Chamber Foundation’s Community Development Partners which began work in 2009. By the end of 2012, every county in the state will be on track to be involved in a Six Pillars Communities effort. Just as important, those efforts feed into the ongoing Six Pillars 20-year Strategic Plan and the progress and regress of these efforts are measured via The Florida Scorecard.
