    The Potential for Doubling International Trade Activity

The international sector of Florida is a critical foundation of the State’s economy, and offers significant potential to enhance the Economic Development of the State in the global economy of the 21st Century.

This position paper argues that it should be a State priority to significantly enhance Florida’s market share in the growing global economy, with the potential existing to double Florida-origin exports of goods and services in the medium term (5-7 years).

International Days

The Florida Chamber of Commerce organized “International Days” in Tallahassee, Florida on April 13-14, 2010 with the support of Enterprise Florida, Inc.

International Days was a two-day networking event during the Florida Legislative Session designed to promote and highlight the significant role international business has in Florida’s economy.   It was an excellent opportunity for participants and organizations to meet with Florida’s legislators and promote the importance international business plays in the economic development of their communities.

  • Based on data for the first four months of 2010, Florida recently passed Washington State to rank 4th among all U.S. states in state origin exports of goods.

  • Our year-to-date exports are now running above 2008 … at all time record levels.

  • China surpassed the U.S. last year as the world’s top trading partner, and is the second largest trading partner in countries like Venezuela and Colombia.

  • Trade through the Miami customs district which includes ports from Palm Beach County to Key West are showing double digit growth in 2010.

  • Florida origin exports to Colombia are showing robust gains (up 22%).

 

  • Florida’s total merchandise trade is up by 20.3% from April 2009 to April 2010, while merchandise exports are up by 15.4% and imports are up by 27.5%.
