The state of Florida is the third-largest consumer of energy in the nation, and our demand for energy will increase by as much as 76 percent between now and 2030. If production continues at today’s rate, there will not be enough energy to support our growing needs. For Florida to be prepared for the next five million Floridians, we must continue to pursue research and development in alternative and renewable energy technology. We must train our energy workforce and create high-paying jobs for Floridians, and we must continue to diversify our energy sources with nuclear, clean coal, biofuels, waste-to-energy, natural gas, solar, biomass, and other clean and renewable generation.
